Breville Barista Express Accessories: What Fits, and What's Already in the Box
The Barista Express uses a 54 mm portafilter, so buy 54 mm tools and leave 51 and 58 mm parts alone. Check the box first: Breville already includes a tamper, a dosing funnel, a Razor tool, baskets, a milk jug and a water filter. A scale is the useful thing it leaves out.

Yes, 54 mm accessories generally suit the Barista Express, because Breville lists a 54 mm portafilter. Tools for 51 or 58 mm don't. Breville names the BES870 on its dosing funnel, 54 mm portafilter assembly, dual wall basket and BWF100NA filter pages. For anything else, check the seller's fit notes and your own basket.

Before you order anything, open the storage tray behind the drip tray. Plenty of the accessories people buy for this machine are already sitting in it.
What's already in the box
Breville's page and the current US manual list these with the machine:
- A 54 mm stainless steel portafilter, with 1-cup and 2-cup baskets in single wall and dual wall
- An integrated, removable 54 mm tamper
- A Dosing Funnel 54 and a Razor dose trimming tool
- A stainless steel milk jug
- A water filter holder and a filter
- A cleaning disc, cleaning tablets, descale powder, a brush, a cleaning tool and an Allen key
What's missing is a scale. That's where we'd start, because everything in our dial-in guide depends on it. The Maestri House S2* is one option, listed with a timer and 0.1 g steps, and the scale page compares others.

“Yes” means the maker says so. We don't own these parts and haven't tried them on a machine, so on a “check first” or “per seller” line, ask before you buy.
The accessories worth a closer look
Dosing funnel. The manual has you twist the funnel onto the portafilter, grind into it and tamp with it attached. A spare only makes sense if yours went missing. The Breville 54 mm funnel* is that same part, and Breville's own page says it suits 54 mm portafilters and is dishwasher safe.
Tamper. The built-in 54 mm tamper is fine to learn on. Upgrade if it tilts or feels awkward. The Normcore V4* and the IKAPE 53.3 mm* are spring-loaded options listed for this basket size. The tamper guide explains why a 53.3 mm base is sold for a 54 mm basket, and how to tamp covers the technique.
Water filter. Breville's BWF100NA is the safe choice. The replacement filter* in our list is a third-party part whose title names the Barista Touch BES880 and not the Express, so only buy it once you've checked your holder. The water page explains when a filter is worth the trouble.
Tamping station and knock box. These are comfort items. The walnut tamping station* holds a 54 mm portafilter while you press, per its listing. Breville itself offers the Knock Box 10* on the Barista Express page. Details are on the knock box page.
Baskets. Use single wall if you grind fresh, as you will on this machine, and keep dual wall for pre-ground coffee. Breville says dual wall baskets regulate the pressure, so they hide some of what a single wall shows you. Our baskets page has more.
How to check a part you're unsure about
Owners with the older BES860 or a different regional model should check their own book, since we've only read the current US edition and an older BES870XL copy.
For the care items, our Breville descaling guide and the cleaning tablets page cover what to buy and when. For the machine itself, go to our Barista Express page, and the general accessories page sets out the buying order for any machine. To watch the shot run, see bottomless portafilters, and check the fit first.
Asked at the bar
What size portafilter does the Breville Barista Express use?
54 mm, in stainless steel, according to Breville's product page and manual. Buy baskets, funnels and distribution tools for that size. Tampers are the one exception to check, because some 54 mm Breville baskets are served by tampers sold at 53.3 mm, so read the seller's fit notes for your model.
Which water filter fits the Barista Express?
Breville's page for its BWF100NA water filters names the Barista Express (BES870) among the machines it suits. Breville's manual says that replacing the filter every two months reduces the need to descale, and more often in hard water. Check your existing filter or batch code, as the same page advises.
Will a bottomless portafilter fit the Barista Express?
Breville's Naked Portafilter 54 mm is listed as compatible with 54 mm Breville espresso machines. The Works With list we could see doesn't name the BES870, though a View More link may add it. Confirm with Breville or the seller before you buy, and see our page on bottomless portafilters for what one actually does.
Do I need to buy a dosing funnel for the Barista Express?
No, not unless yours is lost or worn. The current US manual lists the Dosing Funnel 54 among the accessories in the box, and Breville's product page does too. The separate funnel Breville sells names the BES870 in its Works With list, so it works as a like-for-like spare.
