How to Descale a Breville Espresso Machine: Barista Express, Impress, Bambino
Descale when the machine tells you to, with the agent its manual names. On a Barista Express, a solid CLEAN / DESCALE light means it's time: dissolve one sachet of Breville's powder in 34 fl oz (1 L) of water, enter descale mode, run the coffee, steam and hot water paths until the solution is used up, then rinse with a full tank.

Mix one sachet of Breville descaling powder into 34 fl oz (1 L) of water and fill the tank. Hold 2 CUP and POWER to enter descale mode, then run the coffee, steam and hot water paths in turn. Repeat until the solution is gone, rinse the tank, and repeat with a full tank of fresh water. Buttons differ by model, so check the table below.

What you get: a machine with mineral build-up cleared from its water paths, done the way Breville describes. What it takes: a sachet of descaler, a large container and your attention through a couple of tank changes. Breville's manuals say scale reduces brewing flow, temperature, power and taste, so this isn't one to keep dismissing.
These steps come from Breville's US manuals, BES870_USCM_IB_X26 and BES876_USCM_IB_F26, and we haven't run them on a machine of our own. (The white mineral flakes on the spoon in the photo above stand in for the scale you never see inside.) Other Breville machines exist, and their manuals may differ. Follow your own book where it disagrees with this page. For the wider routine, start with how to clean an espresso machine.
Which job is your machine asking for?
| Machine | Cleaning cycle signal | Descale signal |
|---|---|---|
| Barista Express | CLEAN / DESCALE flashes | CLEAN / DESCALE solid |
| Barista Express Impress | CLEAN / DESCALE flashes | CLEAN / DESCALE solid |
| Bambino | Same alert: 2 Cup keeps flashing, for one clean and descale cycle | Same alert |
| Bambino Plus | 1 CUP and 2 CUP flash in turn, after 200 extractions | 1 CUP and STEAM flash in turn with 2 CUP, for 15 seconds |
If yours is asking for cleaning, you want cleaning tablets and the disc and not this page.
What you need
- The descaler your manual names. The Express and Impress manuals say one sachet of Breville descaling powder. Breville lists descale powder in the box with the Impress, and the Bambino manual lists it too, while the Express product page doesn't.
- A large container. The Bambino manuals specify 68 fl oz (2 L). It's a good size for any of them.
- An empty drip tray that's firmly back in place.
For what's on the market beyond Breville's own powder, see our descaler page.
Descale a Barista Express, step by step
Check the light
A solid CLEAN / DESCALE light means descaling is due. A flashing light means a cleaning cycle is due, which is a different job.Mix the solution
Dissolve one sachet of Breville descaling powder in 34 fl oz (1 L) of water and fill the water tank. The manual warns against removing the tank during descaling.Enter descale mode
Press and hold the 2 CUP button, then press and hold POWER as well. The machine heats up with POWER flashing. It's ready when POWER, 1 CUP, CLEAN / DESCALE and HOT WATER / STEAM are all solid.Descale the coffee path
Press 1 CUP. This takes about 25 seconds, and pressing 1 CUP again ends it early.Descale steam and hot water
Turn the dial to the right for steam, about 13 seconds, then to the left for hot water, about 8 seconds. Turning it to STANDBY ends either one early.Repeat until the solution is used up
After one round, about half of the solution should be left in the tank, about 17 fl oz (0.5 L). Repeat the coffee, steam and hot water steps to use up the rest.Rinse
Remove the tank, rinse it thoroughly and fill it with fresh cold water to the maximum. These steps say 68 fl oz (2 L), while the same manual's parts list says 67 fl oz (2 L). Repeat the coffee, steam and hot water steps to flush out the solution.Exit
Press POWER to leave descale mode. The lights go off. If you leave the machine idle for 5 minutes in this mode it turns itself off, and you resume from entering descale mode.

How the other models differ
| Step | Impress | Bambino | Bambino Plus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solution | 1 sachet in 4 cups (34 fl oz / 1 L); take out the water filter first | Fill to the DESCALE line, add descaling agent | Fill to the DESCALE line, add descaling agent |
| Before you start | Turn the machine off | Empty the drip tray; 68 fl oz (2 L) container under group and wand | Turn it off and let it cool completely; same container |
| Enter the mode | Hold 2 CUP and POWER for 5 seconds | Hold 2 Cup and Steam for 5 seconds; this also starts it | Hold 1 CUP and STEAM for 5 seconds |
| Start | 2 CUP, then the dial right and left | Runs by itself; 2 Cup flashes throughout | Press 1 CUP or STEAM |
| When the solution is gone | Repeat until the tank is used up | It pauses | It pauses |
| Rinse | Rinse tank, full fresh tank, repeat | Refill to MAX, empty the container, press 2 Cup | Refill to MAX, empty the container, press 1 CUP or STEAM |
The Impress manual also says not to use bottled water for descaling, and warns that the machine switches off after 5 minutes without action. Breville's product hub for the BES876 has a short video of the whole job, if you'd rather watch it first.
Common mistakes
- Running the wrong cycle. Check flashing or solid first. A tablet doesn't deal with scale, and descaler isn't what the cleaning cycle calls for.
- Stopping after the first half. The Express manual expects about half the solution left after one round, so you're not finished yet.
- Skipping the full-tank rinse. The manual uses it to flush the solution out, so it's part of the job and not an extra.
- Leaving the filter in. The Impress manual says to take the water filter out before adding powder. Check whether your manual says the same.
- Ignoring the alert. The Bambino manual says you can cancel the flashing with a button press, and also that it isn't recommended to ignore it.
Keep the next one further away
The Express manual says that replacing the water filter every two months reduces the need to descale, and sooner in hard water areas. It also says to remove the filter if you use filtered or bottled water. Your tap water sets the pace, so espresso water is worth reading if the light keeps coming back.

Asked at the bar
What does the flashing light mean on a Breville Barista Express?
On the Barista Express, a flashing CLEAN / DESCALE light asks for a cleaning cycle, which is a back-flush with a tablet. A solid light asks for descaling. The two are separate jobs, so check which one you're seeing before you start. The Impress manual describes the light the same way.
How often should I descale a Breville espresso machine?
When the machine asks. The manuals we read tie descaling to the indicator, and they give no fixed calendar interval. Minerals from hard water are what descaling removes. The Express manual adds that replacing the water filter every two months reduces the need to descale, and it suggests changing it more often in hard water areas.
Can I use vinegar or a third-party descaler in a Breville?
The Barista Express and Impress manuals name Breville's descaling powder, and the Bambino manuals say descaling agent. The manuals we read don't address vinegar or other brands either way, so we can't tell you they're approved. Using what the manual names is the safe course. If you want another product, ask Breville support first.
How long does descaling a Breville take?
The Barista Express manual times each step instead of the whole job: about 25 seconds for coffee, 13 for steam and 8 for hot water per round, plus a heat-up and however long you take between rounds. The Bambino manuals give no total time either, so allow for a few tank changes at your own pace.
